Yevhen Sverstyuk (b.1928) hails from the Volyn area of the Ukraine. He is an essayist who writes on national, philosophical and religious themes in Ukrainian. He has published three books, the most famous being a collection of essays entitled "In the party of wishes" (1989). Owing to his religious convictions, he was not allowed to publish anything in the Soviet era and was sent to a prison camp from 1972-1984. He is a member of the Urkrainian Autocephalous Church, which is persecuted by Moscow, and editor of the church magazine Nasha vira (Our faith). He is also Chairman of the Urkrainian PEN.
