Justo Jorge Padrón was born in 1943 on the Canary Islands, but he now lives in Madrid. He has written 16 collections of poetry and 20 essay and translation works. His latest collection of poetry from 1998 is Escalofrió, and in 1996 he published the bilingual Rumor de la agonía, A Whisper of Agony. He has received many literary prizes, among others the Swedish Academy's award in 1972, and his collection of poetry about circles of hell, Los circulos del infierno, has been translated into 20 languages. All in all, his poems have been translated into 40 languages. Padrón has also worked as the editor-in-chief of the multilingual poetry magazine Equivalencias and as the Secretary General of the Spanish PEN in 1983-1990. He has organized several international poetry festivals in Spain.
