Etienne van Heerden

Etienne van Heerden (born 1954), a lawyer and literary researcher by training, is one of the most prominent writers in South Africa writing in Afrikaans. Van Heerden is a prosaist, poet, essayist and columnist who has received several national and international awards. In his novels he describes people caught between the historical-political powers.The novel Toorberg (1986, Ancestral Voices 1989) has been translated into nine languages.Die Stoetmeester (1993, Leap Year 1997) and his latest novel Kikoejoe (1996) continue dissecting the recent history of South Africa. Van Heerden currently works as an Associate Professor of Literature at the Univeristy of Cape Town.
