Sophie Hannah was born in Manchester in 1971 and debuted in 1992 with a book for children. Hannah's fifth collection of poems Leaving and Leaving You came out 1999. Her debut novel Gripless was published in March this year. It was immediately recognized in The Times as the most important debut of the year and she was ranked amongst the five best future talents. Hannah's poem collections The Hero and the Girl Next Door (1995) and Hotels Like Houses (1996) were largely noticed and rewarded with several prizes. She was a Patron of the 1995 UK Year of Literature and Writing. Hannah now teaches creative writing at the University of Manchester and has also been the author of numerous manuscripts for radio and TV.
