Mikhail Berg

Mikhail Berg (b. 1952), from St Petersburg, is a well-known writer, journalist, controversial essayist and polemist who has published seven novels, most recently Neschastnaya Duel (2000, ”Unlucky duel”). Last year, Berg defended his doctorate at the University of Helsinki on the theme of "Literocracy. A Problem of Assumption and Redistribution of Values and Power in Literature". In his doctorate, Berg uses sociological analysis to shed light on the goals and meaning of the literary strategies of both Socialistic Realism and Postmodernism in the changing field of society and culture. From 1989 to 1995, he was editor-in-chief of the literary almanac "Bulletin of new literature" and has written more than 400 newspaper articles, in recent years concerning in particular the status of the writer and literature in society. He also contributes to numerous Russian and foreign newspapers and periodicals such as Welt am Sonntag, Moskovskie Novosti, Kommersant, and the radio stations Deutsche Welle and Svoboda. Berg is on the nomination boards of several major literary awards (Russian Booker, Severnaya Palmira and Andrei Belyi prize for literature).
