Vicent Alonso (b. 1948) is a Catalan poet and critic. He is Professor of Modern Catalan Literature at the University of Valencia. Alonso's literary production comprises four collections of poems: Vel de claredats (1983, "Veil of brightness"), Albes d'enlloc (1985, "Dawns of emptiness"), Ritme de clepsidra (1986, "Rhythm of a water clock") and Cercles de la mirada (1997, "Circles of the glance"), which won the esteemed Ausiàs March de Gandia prize in its year of publication. As a critic, he specialises in short prose and has published numerous articles and books on the subject. He is currently working on a new collection entitled Notes sobre literatura ("Notes on literature"), which comprises both published and unpublished articles on literature. Alonso has been a zealous promoter of Catalan literature and founded the literary magazine Daina published in Valencia. Nowadays he is the editor-in-chief of Caràcters, a magazine which presents and reviews books published by modern Catalan publishing houses. He also selects the Catalan and foreign authors to be published in the "valències" series published by Tàndem. Besides his work as a critic and poet, Vicente Alonso has translated into Catalan a wide range of French literature such as works by Tristan Tzara, Charles Baudelaire and Michel de Montaigne.
